Water Conservation

Water conservation is critical in times of drought, but it is also needed in times of plenty because water is a precious, yet limited, resource. By implementing water conservation practices our customers save money, protect drinking water and, of course, prevent water waste!

Increase water demand may cause utilities to exceed their current water allotment. Ultimately, our customers will have the financial burden of acquiring additional water rights.  Save money now! Most excessive water use is attributed to over watering, irrigation leaks and timer malfunction. Properly manage your irrigation systems and save thousands of gallons monthly. For more information, download our water conservation flyers ("What to ask your Landscaper" and "Water Wise Irrigation Tips").

Protect your drinking water. Excessive irrigation is water conservation and a watershed concern! Over watering creates a pathway for fertilizer, salts, feces and waste to enter into Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe is the source of our drinking water and it is everyone’s responsibility to Keep Tahoe Clean

Water conservation is easy to do and may only require a small change in some of your daily habits. Follow the steps below to save money, energy, the environment, and of course water!

Basic tips for water conservation:
• Never water during the middle of the day
• Become re-acquainted with your broom, never hose off driveways and sidewalks
• Contact WASTE NOT for a free residential irrigation audit at (775) 832-1284
• Install an irrigation timer
• Replace and repair spray heads
• Water in short spurts rather than one long session
• Check out our local demonstration garden website.

For more information call the WASTE NOT HOTLINE at (775) 832-1284 or contact us.

A fabulous resource for learning about water conservation strategies is the UNR Cooperative Extension publication, “The Home Landscaping Guide for Lake Tahoe and Vicinity”. Click the link to check out this easy to read guide.
