Household Hazardous Waste & Electronic Waste

To dispose of household hazardous waste (HHW), Incline Village and Crystal Bay residents may drop off the material at the WASTE NOT Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Center.

Location: 1220 Sweetwater Rd.  Turn left at the second driveway on left labeled "Public Works".  The Waste Not Household Hazardous Waste Container is located on the left (west side) of the Public Works Building. Please ring the bell on the HHW container or let the front desk know when you need assistance.

Televisions:  Sorry, we cannot accept televisions in our E-Waste program.  As of February 18, 2009, analog televisions will be rendered obsolete as the FCC changes broadcast signals to digital format. If you subscribe to a cable or satellite service; your service should normally continue. If you have an older television, contact your local service provider to find out if your television is compatible with the new format.  If you use an antenna or rabbit ears; a simple converter box will allow you to continue to use the television. The U.S. Government is issuing $40 coupons toward the purchase of converter boxes. You can receive a free voucher by filling out a short form at https://www.dtv2009.gov/

What is a Household Hazardous Waste? A receptacle that contains or once held toxic chemicals and is capable of contaminating soil, surface water, and ground water is considered a hazardous waste.  Chemicals labeled flammable, toxic, explosive, and poisonous are especially hazardous if they are improperly stored, accumulate in one place or site, dumped in a storm drain, or emptied into a sewer.

Did you know that each person in the United States produces an average of eleven pounds of hazardous waste per year? That’s 1.6 million tons!

Always try to use up the entire hazardous product, and opt for safe alternatives in the future. 

Accepted items include:
Acids, aerosols, ammonia-based cleaners, bug spray, Drain-O, fertilizer, flammable liquids, gasoline, herbicides, lye, mothballs, oxidizers, paints, pesticides, poisons, solvents. 

Items not accepted:
Latex paints (can be dried and put in trash), industrial-hazardous wastes and bio-hazardous wastes (medical wastes).

If you have a minimal amount of paint left in a can you can simply leave the lids off (allowing the paint to dry completely), then place the cans out with your regular trash. To speed this drying process along, add kitty litter to the can to help absorb moisture.
